Why does my hip hurt?

Arthritis and hip fractures may cause pain or decreased mobility that medications and walking aids may not relieve. When this situation occurs, it may be the right time to consider an evaluation by your Hughston doctor for hip surgery. Total hip replacement with an artificial joint can relieve discomfort and restore range of motion and function of your hip joint. Consult a Hughston physician to find out if you are a candidate for hip replacement surgery.

Hip surgery advice

Complete recovery from hip surgery can take 3 to 6 months, depending on the type of surgery, your overall health, and how quickly exercises help. While you recuperate, work with your physical therapists and follow your doctor’s instructions. Free your hands and arms for crutches or a walker by wearing an apron or use a tote to carry things around. Use a long-handled “reacher” to turn on lights and retrieve items you need. Don’t try to carry too much. Walking is good for you, so make multiple trips to carry what you need.

Don’t suffer with hip pain

If you have pain in your hip that is accompanied by swelling, redness, tenderness, or warmth around the joint, schedule an appointment with a Hughston doctor for an evaluation. While you’re waiting for the appointment, begin self-care measures, such as rest and ice, to help reduce pain and swelling. And ask you healthcare provider if an over-the-counter medication will help relieve your pain.
